Maryland in CUW's disclosure: a guide for nurse practitioner applicants
Concordia University Wisconsin files Maryland under "Does Not Meet Requirements" in every graduate nurse practitioner table it publishes, from the MSN FNP and AGPCNP through the two DNPs and both CAGE certificates. CUW is not describing any of them as a way to become a certified NP in Maryland. Behind that row: a Board that vets each NP program, a preceptor tax credit, and a metro shared with Virginia.

Maryland turns up on older CUW notices too. The MSN page archived in 2022 and in August 2024, and the 2022 Post-MSN DNP page, counted Maryland among states where CUW was not enrolling new students, while the 2023 to mid-2024 disclosure still read "Meets" for the MSN and DNPs. How the Maryland Board looks at NP programs
Maryland checks the program, not only the person. Before its Board of Nursing certifies anyone as an advanced practice nurse, it must have approved the NP program that person completed, and a program absent from the approved list gets onto it only when the school sends in the Program Approval Form.
Clinicals are looser. No Board step was found that a school based elsewhere has to clear before placing students at Maryland sites; the Board's education page treats such programs as a licensure matter and offers a substantial-equivalency tool. A graduate APRN student in an accredited program is also exempt from Maryland licensure while practicing within that program (Health Occupations 8-301(d)(2)), and SARA participants are excused from MHEC's registration rule for online schools from other states. Practice, precepting and Maryland's tax credit
AANP rates Maryland full practice; new NPs first declare 18 months of mentorship from a physician or certified NP.
Preceptors in Maryland can also earn something back at tax time. Under Tax-General section 10-739, an NP or physician who completes three or more Board-approved NP rotations, each one 90-plus hours of community-based teaching in a workforce shortage area named by the state health department, may claim a state income tax credit. It pays by the rotation, carries yearly caps and is set to lapse on June 30, 2030. Because it is written around students of programs the Maryland Board recognizes, whether it applies to a student from an out-of-state school is for the Board to say.
Among Maryland's large systems are MedStar Health, the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), Luminis Health, LifeBridge Health and Johns Hopkins Medicine. The biggest population centers are the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson metro and the Maryland counties of the Washington metro, with Lexington Park and Hagerstown smaller hubs. None of these systems publishes a link to CUW.
Your RN license in Maryland
NCSBN's implementation table dates Maryland's place in the current Nurse Licensure Compact to January 19, 2018. A multistate privilege from another member lets a nurse work in Maryland under Maryland law, and a Maryland-issued multistate license travels to Virginia, Wisconsin and the other members. The APRN Compact is a different story: Maryland has passed no law joining it, and it still awaits a seventh adopter before it can run. Questions CUW students ask
Does CUW's online FNP lead to NP certification in Maryland?
CUW's own disclosure answers no: the MSN primary care NP table, which covers the FNP and AGPCNP tracks, lists Maryland as not meeting requirements. Maryland's Board also keeps its own list of approved NP programs, so check that list and ask CUW admissions directly before relying on anything else.
Can a Maryland preceptor claim the tax credit for a CUW student?
The statute frames the credit around students of programs recognized by the Maryland Board, with rotations in state-named shortage areas. CUW publishes nothing about Maryland recognition, and its table puts Maryland in the does-not-meet column, so a preceptor hoping to claim it should put the question to the state health department first.
Do I need a Maryland license for a clinical rotation there?
Maryland's practice act excuses accredited graduate APRN students while they practice within their program, and multistate RN privileges from other member states work there. CUW sets no written rule about a license in the clinical state and leaves out-of-state checks with you, so run the plan past the Graduate Clinical Coordinator.
I live in Maryland but work in D.C. Which row applies to me?
CUW's MSN table lists Washington, D.C. as meeting requirements, and archived CUW pages sent D.C. students to Virginia for clinicals. The disclosure speaks to licensure where you will practice, so if your NP career will be in D.C. or Virginia, read those rows and get CUW's confirmation in writing.
