Finding an NP preceptor in Milwaukee and southeast Wisconsin
Milwaukee is the closest big market to CUW's Mequon campus, and its large health systems each run a student process of their own, almost always driven by a request from the school rather than from you. That shifts a Milwaukee-area search toward independent and community practices, and it makes the systems' calendars, not only CUW's, the thing to plan around.

Why Milwaukee searches work differently
The Milwaukee-Waukesha metro holds roughly 1.58 million people, so there is no shortage of primary care. The catch is access. Each area system with a published NP student process wants two things before it says yes: an agreement signed at the school level, and a request your school files for you. Two large Wisconsin names, MCW and Madison's UW Health, have also stopped signing new agreements for now.
Nothing on CUW's pages names a clinical partner system for its NP programs, so treat every system below as a door with its own rules, described here only from that system's own public pages. Ask the Graduate Clinical Coordinator whether CUW holds an agreement with any system on your list. Froedtert ThedaCare and the Medical College of Wisconsin
Froedtert routes every NP and nurse-midwife student request through one application, the Medical College of Wisconsin's NP student process. Froedtert's page says an affiliation agreement and a program memorandum are needed for each student experience, and Froedtert South in Pleasant Prairie sits outside that process. MCW's page adds that your school needs agreements with both organizations, and that MCW has paused new agreements with programs it does not already work with.
The calendar is early. MCW lists a September 8 deadline for spring and January 15 for both summer and fall, with decisions within about eight weeks of each deadline; applications for the summer and fall 2027 terms opened September 1, 2026 and close January 15, 2027. MCW also warns that anyone who sidesteps the process is stopped from continuing, so a direct email to an NP there is the wrong opening move.
Aurora Health Care
Aurora coordinates NP, DNP, nurse-midwife and nurse anesthesia students through its Clinician Student Services office. Its page, as archived in March 2026, says Aurora is currently taking rotation requests only for current Aurora employees who attend one of its core academic partner schools, and it lists eight names. One entry reads only "Concordia". Aurora never specifies the campus, and nothing on CUW's site names Aurora as a partner, so confirm with the Graduate Clinical Coordinator before building a plan on it.
The mechanics are school-driven here too. Requests reach Aurora through MyClinicalExchange, filed by the school's coordinator or clinical director; students are barred from arranging time with Aurora preceptors on their own; and each student must show a current Wisconsin RN license. Ascension Wisconsin and Children's Wisconsin
Ascension Wisconsin has no NP-specific page; its published route covers nursing and allied health students in general. A school coordinator or designee files each request in the Electronic Student Clinical Placement Process at least 8 weeks ahead, and students cannot file for themselves. Ascension cautions that an affiliation agreement may need 4 to 8 weeks, sometimes more, that background checks and training are due a month before the start, and that nursing requests in the southeast of the state are scheduled on the SEWNA calendar.
Children's Wisconsin accepts graduate requests only from faculty, books a single semester per request, and limits its graduate form to students in the final MSN or DNP semester. Spring requests are due by November 1 and fall requests by May 31. For an FNP student, that timing lines up with NURS 7153, whose catalog description puts children, older adults and women's health in the spotlight. The 2014-15 handbook capped FNP secondary sites such as pediatrics at 100 hours each, so a pediatric placement adds to a primary care site rather than replacing it.

Where to look beyond the big systems
For FNP and AGPCNP students the target is community primary care: solo and small-group family practices, internal medicine offices, neighborhood clinics and practice groups in the suburbs between Milwaukee and Mequon or out toward Waukesha. CUW's archived rules also allowed urgent care and walk-in clinics as an exception to the primary care requirement, while ruling out acute care as a primary site. PMHNP students have a different map. The settings CUW lists for its PMHNP graduates run from community mental health centers and behavioral health outpatient programs to primary care with integrated mental health, telehealth and inpatient psychiatric units, which gives you several doors besides the hospital systems. Whatever the setting, Wisconsin's N 1.08(6) asks that a preceptor hold a clean Wisconsin license or practice privilege at your target level or higher, with the school's faculty signing off. How we search Milwaukee for CUW students

Questions CUW students ask
Can I email a Froedtert or Aurora nurse practitioner and ask them to precept me?
Both systems ask students to use their formal channels instead. Aurora bars students from booking time with its preceptors directly, and MCW's process for Froedtert says a student who skips it cannot continue. Ask the Graduate Clinical Coordinator whether CUW can submit a request before you reach out to anyone there.
Is the Concordia on Aurora's partner list CUW?
Aurora's list says only "Concordia" and does not name the campus, and CUW's pages do not mention Aurora as a partner. Treat it as unconfirmed. Aurora's rule also applies only to current Aurora employees, so the Graduate Clinical Coordinator is the right person to ask whether any of it applies to you.
How far ahead should I start a Milwaukee-area search?
Earlier than you think. Froedtert and MCW want spring requests by September 8, Children's Wisconsin by November 1, and Ascension at least 8 weeks before the start date. CUW's archived handbook said a brand-new clinical contract could take two to three months. Independent practices can move faster, especially when a contract is already in place.
Does UW Health take students from Milwaukee-area programs?
UW Health is Madison-based, and its page says it is not accepting new affiliation agreements. It ranks UW-Madison partners first and its own employees in affiliated programs second, and its preferred-program list does not name CUW. For most Milwaukee-area CUW students, community practices are the more realistic target.
