Mississippi and Concordia University Wisconsin's graduate nursing programs
Every graduate nurse practitioner table Concordia University Wisconsin publishes gives Mississippi one verdict, "Does Not Meet Requirements", whether the program is the MSN's FNP or AGPCNP track, either doctoral route or one of the two CAGE certificates. CUW is not pitching those programs as a way into APRN licensure in Mississippi. The state also runs nursing-education oversight through its college board rather than its Board of Nursing, which changes who a school would answer to.

Mississippi was never on the lists of excluded states that CUW's archived MSN and Post-MSN DNP pages carried, and until the August 2024 revision, the disclosure itself counted Mississippi as meeting for the master's and both doctoral tables. The CUW tables that still put Mississippi under "Meets" belong to campus BSN study, where CUW arranges clinicals itself; the licensure disclosures page sets all of this out.
IHL, not the nursing board, reviews schools from elsewhere
Mississippi splits the job. Nursing degree programs answer to the state's university governing board, known as IHL (Institutions of Higher Learning); the Board of Nursing's approval role covers PN programs. IHL expects any undergraduate or graduate nursing program from outside the state that holds clinicals in Mississippi to meet Mississippi's standards.
What IHL's process involves
- Physical presence: in IHL's eyes, a practicum held in Mississippi makes the program domiciled there, which sets off a review by IHL Nursing Education lasting up to three months.
- Timing: Appendix S of the procedures manual IHL issued in August 2024 has out-of-state programs ask for that review four months or more before they start.
- Authorization: the program also needs SARA participation or, failing that, non-SARA distance-education authorization through MCCA.
- License: under IHL standards, students in APRN clinical courses must be licensed as RNs, without encumbrance, to practice in the state hosting their clinicals.
Each of these is a school-level filing. Whether CUW has ever gone through IHL review is something only CUW can confirm, so ask before any Mississippi plan; the out-of-state clinicals guide explains CUW's own rule.
Collaborative practice and Mississippi preceptors
AANP places Mississippi in reduced practice. In Mississippi, each NP's practice runs through a Board-approved collaboration with a physician or dentist licensed in the state, and preceptors teach within that arrangement. The state has no preceptor incentive on record.
Large systems in the state include the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), Singing River Health System, Forrest Health and the North Mississippi Health Services network, plus Baptist Memorial Health Care, headquartered in Memphis but operating Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. Jackson and Gulfport-Biloxi are the largest metros wholly in the state, alongside Hattiesburg and the Mississippi counties of greater Memphis. None of these systems publishes a CUW connection.
Licensing: compact member, firm clinical-license standard
NCSBN's implementation table puts Mississippi in the current compact from January 19, 2018. Per the Board, compact nurses in good standing may cross into other member states for work, and their employers are barred from requiring an extra license from the remote state. There is no Mississippi APRN Compact law.
IHL's standard adds a plain rule for graduate clinicals held in Mississippi: the student's RN license must be unencumbered and good in that state. CUW, separately, wants MSN, DNP and CAGE students to keep a clean RN license from admission to graduation; details are on RN license for clinicals.

Questions CUW students ask
Can I enroll in CUW's online NP program from Mississippi?
CUW posts no enrollment restriction by state of residence on its disclosure or nursing pages. Its table, however, gives every graduate NP program a does-not-meet answer for Mississippi, so CUW is not saying the program qualifies you for APRN licensure there. Get the current answer from CUW admissions in writing.
Who approves an out-of-state NP program's clinicals in Mississippi?
IHL Nursing Education, not the Board of Nursing. IHL treats clinicals in the state as physical presence, reviews the program against Mississippi's standards, and wants programs based elsewhere to ask four months or more ahead. The school files; the student does not.
Does my Mississippi multistate license work for clinicals in Arkansas?
If Mississippi is your declared home, your license is multistate and you are in good standing, you can practice in Arkansas and the other member states. CUW is silent on whether the host state of a clinical expects a separate license, so ask CUW's coordinator before any Arkansas preceptor is confirmed.
What if I move to Mississippi partway through a CUW program?
Tell CUW before you go. Clinicals in Mississippi would face IHL's review and CUW's own out-of-state rule, and CUW's table would still list Mississippi as not meeting requirements. Settle where your remaining clinicals will happen with the Graduate Clinical Coordinator first.
