Alabama and CUW's online nurse practitioner programs
Concordia University Wisconsin's current disclosure places Alabama under "Does Not Meet Requirements" for every online graduate nursing table it publishes, and for the RN to BSN as well. Put simply, a CUW NP credential is not listed as leading to licensure in Alabama.

CUW publishes no rule barring Alabama residents from enrolling. The disclosure speaks to licensure: completing one of these programs may not satisfy what Alabama's board requires of a new NP. Get CUW admissions' answer in writing first; the disclosure guide explains the page.
An answer that has moved more than once
Alabama's history on CUW's pages zigzags. The archived 2022 MSN and Post-MSN DNP pages named Alabama among states CUW was not taking new students from. The 2024 MSN page's list no longer included it, and CUW's disclosure table from March 2023 through May 2024 rated Alabama "Meets" for the MSN and both DNPs. The "Does Not Meet" entry first shows in the August 2024 copy, and the nursing tables have held since.
CUW has published no reason for any of these shifts.
Alabama's approval step for out-of-state clinicals
Alabama asks for paperwork before the first shift. The governing text, 610-X-3-.09 in Alabama's administrative code, has an advanced practice program from another state send the Board of Nursing its intent, with supporting approvals, at least fifteen days before the student's Alabama start. The submission identifies you and your license, your clinical supervisor and theirs, and the facility, whose top nurse (its director of nursing or CNO) signs a statement for it. The school also owes Alabama a yearly program fee, and per the Board's FAQ no student sets foot in an Alabama clinical before approval and payment are complete.
The license rule is just as firm. An MSN or DNP student training in Alabama needs an unencumbered RN license that is either Alabama-issued or multistate, and faculty who teach students in Alabama beyond 30 days a year face the same condition. Alabama's compact membership started January 1, 2020, two years after Wisconsin's; Alabama is not an APRN Compact state. See clinicals outside Wisconsin for the check CUW leaves with its students.
Practice rules and preceptor credits in Alabama
AANP files Alabama under reduced practice. NPs there work within a state-regulated collaboration with a physician that covers some part of their practice, and the Board of Medical Examiners shares NP oversight with the Board of Nursing.
Rural preceptors may qualify for a credit against Alabama income tax through the Preceptor Tax Incentive Program when they teach in community settings in medically underserved areas. It began with the 2024 tax year, sunsets September 29, 2031, and counts a rotation only when the program is physically in Alabama.
Alabama NP students tend to look in the big metros. Birmingham has UAB Medicine; Huntsville has the Huntsville Hospital Health System; Mobile's pair are Infirmary Health and USA Health (run by the University of South Alabama); Montgomery has Baptist Health. Every one of them writes its own student rules.

Questions CUW students ask
Is CUW's online FNP open to Alabama residents?
CUW publishes no enrollment restriction by state, but its disclosure rates Alabama Does Not Meet for the MSN primary care NP, the FNP's table. In other words, the program is not shown as satisfying Alabama's requirements for NP licensure. Ask CUW admissions how that applies to your plans before you apply.
What must happen before any student does clinicals in Alabama for an out-of-state school?
At least 15 days out, the school sends Alabama's Board a notice of intent with approval documents naming the student, the supervisor, both license numbers and the facility, plus a statement from the facility's nursing leader. An annual fee from the school is part of approval, and the student needs an Alabama or multistate RN license.
Did CUW's table always list Alabama as not meeting requirements?
No. Archived copies of CUW's disclosure from March 2023 to May 2024 rated Alabama as meeting requirements for the MSN and both DNP programs. The change to Does Not Meet appears in the August 2024 copy. Earlier still, CUW's 2022 program pages had listed Alabama among states it was not enrolling from.
Would a preceptor in rural Alabama get the state tax credit for precepting a CUW student?
Alabama's Preceptor Tax Incentive Program counts only rotations that support programs physically located in Alabama. CUW is based in Mequon, Wisconsin, so a rotation for a CUW student falls outside the credit. Eligibility details sit with Alabama's statewide AHEC office.
