The more-than-one-semester rule
New Mexico's Board ties its approval rule to duration. Part 16.12.3 NMAC, the Board's education rules, asks a school to apply for Board approval once its clinical or field placements inside New Mexico run longer than one semester. The part addresses programs that train people toward a New Mexico license and never mentions RN-BSN or NP programs by name.
Map that onto CUW. The FNP clinicals (NURS 7151 to NURS 7153) and the AGPCNP clinicals (NURS 7265 to NURS 7267) are 250-hour courses taken one per semester, so a student who stays in New Mexico for all three crosses that line. Whether a graduate NP program falls under the rule, and whether CUW has applied, are for the Graduate Clinical Coordinator to answer, ideally a term ahead.
Three New Mexico semesters is more than one: ask CUW about Board approval first.
How New Mexico defines a clinical preceptor
The same part defines who may precept. In New Mexico's wording, a clinical preceptor is a nurse, has at least two years of practice behind them, and holds a license at a level equal to or above the credential the student is training for; schools from other states that gain New Mexico placement approval are held to those minimums.
CUW's 2022 FAQ asked for two years of clinical experience, a state license and board certification, while its 2014-15 handbook also accepted physicians, PAs and certified nurse-midwives. A board-certified NP with two years in practice fits both (dated CUW details: preceptor requirements). Because AANP classifies the state as full practice, an NP-owned clinic is a realistic primary care site.
Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe, Farmington
Greater Albuquerque, at roughly 925,000 residents in the 2025 Census estimates, is about four times the size of Las Cruces (about 229,000), and the Santa Fe and Farmington metros each hold between 120,000 and 160,000. In Santa Fe, CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center carries the CHRISTUS Health name; beyond it, look at Lovelace Health System and at Presbyterian Healthcare Services; and UNM Health System runs the only academic medical center New Mexico has.
CUW names no New Mexico partner, and its 2014-15 handbook warned that large systems offer few placements and told students to keep a plan B. For FNP and AGPCNP hours, an independent primary care practice in Las Cruces or Farmington can be the stronger bet, with time allowed for a new clinical contract.

New Mexico has been an NLC state since January 19, 2018. Residents get multistate licenses from the New Mexico Board, and a Wisconsin-issued multistate license already covers clinical work here. New Mexico has not passed the APRN Compact. For CUW's own license rule, see RN license for clinicals.
Near a border, check the neighbor's row. Colorado meets in all five graduate tables; Texas meets for the MSN and both DNPs but not for the CAGE certificates; Arizona and Oklahoma are listed as not meeting in any of them.

Questions CUW students ask
Can I enroll in CUW's online FNP program from Albuquerque?
Yes. The FNP track belongs to CUW's MSN primary care NP table, and that table puts New Mexico among the states meeting requirements; so do the Post-BSN DNP, Post-MSN DNP and CAGE tables. Plan on securing preceptors for 750 hours, each approved by CUW's graduate faculty.
Does New Mexico's Board need to approve CUW before my clinicals?
Possibly. The Board wants placement approval from programs whose New Mexico clinicals outlast a single semester, but its rule is silent on graduate NP programs. Three CUW clinicals in the state would cross that line, so get the Graduate Clinical Coordinator's view before you commit to a preceptor.
Can a physician be my CUW preceptor in New Mexico?
CUW's 2014-15 handbook accepted physicians, provided at least 50 program hours were spent with an NP. New Mexico's rules, though, define the preceptor as a nurse, one with at least two years of experience. If those rules govern your placement, a physician may not fit, so confirm with CUW before relying on one.
Will my Wisconsin nursing license work for New Mexico clinicals?
A multistate Wisconsin RN license does: New Mexico and Wisconsin have both used the NLC since January 19, 2018. A single-state license from outside the compact would not carry over. CUW separately requires the license to stay unencumbered for the whole program, and the Graduate Clinical Coordinator can answer clinical-state licensing questions.
