The harder questions are Illinois' own: a Wisconsin compact license carries no weight there, new NPs start under collaborative agreements, and one board rule reaches outside programs seeking Illinois clinical sites.

What CUW's table says for Illinois
All five graduate tables on CUW's Distance Education Disclosures file Illinois under "Meets Requirements," and so does the RN to BSN table. The PMHNP degrees get no rows, which leaves their Illinois answer unstated rather than negative.

Hours logged in Illinois count as clinicals outside Wisconsin, which brings in the extra eligibility step described in the out-of-state guide.
Collaboration, prescribing and the preceptor rule
Illinois licenses nurses through IDFPR, home to the state's Board of Nursing. AANP calls the state reduced practice, pointing to collaborative agreements with physicians in certain settings and extra conditions before an NP may prescribe some Schedule II drugs or benzodiazepines. Wisconsin's Board, sizing up its neighbors, put Illinois' bar for full practice authority at 4,000 hours after certification and 250 hours of continuing education.
Illinois also has a preceptor clause. Rule 1300.340(j) says the program's faculty must sign off on any facility staff member who precepts and give that person an orientation; the preceptor has to be on hand each time the student sees patients, and must hold an RN license in the student's practice state. CUW's graduate faculty then apply their own standards.
Illinois' packet for out-of-state programs
Few states spell this out, but Illinois does. Under rule 1300.340(n), a nursing program based elsewhere that wants Illinois clinical placements files a packet with the Board, holds the resulting approval for two years at a time and reports each year.
Items the Board wants to see
- Proof of approval or accreditation back home
- A letter covering dates, host agencies and specific units
- The syllabus for the course
- A signed contract with each facility
- Forms showing faculty qualifications and preceptors
Two gaps matter. The rule sits in the RN program-approval section and never says whether graduate APRN programs are included. And the licensing statute, 225 ILCS 65/50-15(b)(10), shelters out-of-state RNs enrolled in a graduate program "in this State", which fits an online Wisconsin program awkwardly. CUW is silent on both, so put them to the Graduate Clinical Coordinator before any Illinois practice signs.
Licensing: no compact route into Illinois
NCSBN's map shows Illinois outside the Nurse Licensure Compact and lists no bill to join it; the APRN Compact has not been enacted there either. A multistate license from Wisconsin or Iowa therefore adds nothing for Illinois practice. CUW requires an unencumbered RN license all through the MSN, DNP or CAGE program without naming the state that issues it. Nurses already working in Illinois hold an Illinois license by necessity; a Wisconsin nurse aiming for Illinois hours should settle the question first (license guide).

The Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro holds most Illinoisans, about 8.7 million on the Illinois side. The metro-east piece of greater St. Louis adds roughly 672,000, and Peoria and Rockford follow. Northwestern Medicine, Endeavor Health and UChicago Medicine are among the big names, alongside OSF HealthCare and Advocate Health Care, which is Advocate Health's Illinois arm. FNP and AGPCNP hours belong in family medicine, internal medicine and community clinics rather than acute care (primary care sites); PMHNP students clear each mental health setting with graduate faculty.

Yes. Illinois is marked as meeting requirements for the MSN primary care NP, both DNPs and both CAGE certificates in CUW's current disclosure, and CUW posts no enrollment limit by home state. Because your hours would be logged in Illinois, CUW's catalog makes you responsible for confirming the program qualifies under Illinois rules.
Will my Wisconsin compact license work for Illinois clinicals?
Not for Illinois. Because Illinois stayed out of the Nurse Licensure Compact, a Wisconsin multistate license grants no Illinois privilege. CUW's pages leave open whether an out-of-state graduate student needs an Illinois license to train there, which makes it a question for the Graduate Clinical Coordinator before you lock in an Illinois practice.
What does an Illinois NP gain from precepting a CUW student?
Continuing education credit. Each academic term, semester or quarter, of precepting one APRN student is worth 10 CE hours toward an Illinois APRN's renewal, to a ceiling of 30 hours per cycle. The school has to document it, so your preceptor would need that paperwork from CUW; the Graduate Clinical Coordinator can say how CUW issues it.
Does Illinois require CUW to file for approval before I train there?
Possibly. Rule 1300.340(n) asks nursing programs from other states for a five-part packet, but it is written into the RN approval section and never mentions graduate APRN programs. CUW publishes nothing about an Illinois filing, so bring the question to the Graduate Clinical Coordinator well ahead of your start date.
