CUW's online NP programs for Indiana nurses
Concordia University Wisconsin's current disclosure lists Indiana as meeting requirements for all five of its graduate NP tables, so an Indiana RN can plan CUW clinicals at home. Indiana's Board of Nursing leaves graduate programs from every state outside its review. The tricky part is the map: two of Indiana's metro areas spill into neighboring states where CUW's answer changes.

Indiana sits in the "Meets Requirements" column of every graduate NP table CUW publishes, a status the online RN to BSN shares.

The psychiatric MSN and DNP are the gap, with no state rows at all, so Indiana applicants to either should ask admissions. Our licensure disclosure page shows how the tables shifted in 2024.
Reduced practice and your preceptor pool
On AANP's map Indiana is a reduced practice state: an Indiana NP needs a physician collaborator on paper, and the state regulates that arrangement for part of the NP's work. That NP still sees patients, prescribes and can teach a CUW student; CUW's graduate faculty decide whether that person fits, using the standards on our preceptor requirements page.
Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood dominates at about 2.2 million people, and Fort Wayne is the largest metro lying wholly inside the state after it. Indiana University Health and Community Health Network count among the large systems, and so do Franciscan Health, Parkview Health and Ascension St. Vincent. Every one of them runs its own student intake, and none appears on CUW's pages as a clinical partner.
Indiana's Board steps back from graduate programs
Indiana licenses nurses through its Professional Licensing Agency, where the State Board of Nursing sits. The Board accredits the Indiana schools leading to a first RN or LPN credential and, in its own words, leaves RN-BSN and graduate nursing programs outside its review. The rule listing eligible programs (848 IAC 1-2-4) likewise stops at pre-licensure education, so a Wisconsin graduate program sending you to an Indiana clinic files nothing with the Board, as far as the published record shows.
That puts CUW's own process in charge. You secure the preceptor and site, graduate faculty approve them, and under CUW's archived handbooks no patient could be seen until a contract with the site was signed. The contract side is on our clinical contracts page.
Border metros, where CUW's answer changes
Northwest Indiana counts roughly 729,000 people inside the Chicago metro, and the counties across from Louisville add about 281,000 more. Pick a preceptor over the line and you answer to that state's licensing rules and to CUW's row for it.
- Illinois: fine on CUW's table, yet a non-compact state, which means your Indiana multistate license ends where Illinois begins. Our Illinois guide covers the rest.
- Kentucky: a compact state, so your license may reach Louisville, yet CUW lists Kentucky as not meeting requirements for any NP table. Keep southern Indiana clinicals on the Indiana bank of the Ohio River unless CUW says otherwise; see our Kentucky page.
- Michigan meets in CUW's table but sits outside the compact. Ohio meets, and it joined the compact on the first day of 2023.
Licensing for an Indiana rotation
Indiana's multistate licenses have worked since July 1, 2020. An RN whose home state is Indiana, or another compact member, practices in Indiana on that multistate license. Indiana has not enacted the APRN Compact.

Questions CUW students ask
Can Indiana nurses enroll in CUW's online FNP program?
Yes. On CUW's current disclosure, Indiana's entry in the primary care NP master's table reads "Meets Requirements", and that table spans the FNP track, the AGPCNP track and both FNP dual degrees. Outside the F-1 visa restriction on online formats, CUW sets no residency-based bar.
Does Indiana make CUW get approval before I start clinicals?
Indiana's Board leaves graduate nursing programs outside its review, and its approval rules reach only pre-licensure schools, so the published record shows no state step for CUW. Individual health systems and practices can still require an affiliation agreement with CUW, which is why the contract step deserves an early start.
Can a physician be my preceptor in Indiana?
Possibly. Back in 2014-15, CUW's NP handbook let MDs, DOs and PAs precept alongside NPs, as long as an NP supervised 50 or more of your program hours and a semester used no more than two preceptors without approval. Those rules are dated; today's answer comes from graduate faculty, so name the physician to the Graduate Clinical Coordinator early.
I live in Lake County near Chicago. Can I use an Illinois preceptor?
CUW's table lists Illinois as meeting requirements, so the program side is fine. The license is the catch: Illinois stays out of the compact, so an Indiana multistate RN license does not carry you across, and an Illinois license would likely be needed. Put the question to the Graduate Clinical Coordinator early, before any site agrees.
