Louisiana and Concordia University Wisconsin's nurse practitioner programs
Concordia University Wisconsin's current disclosure answers the Louisiana question the same way in every graduate nurse practitioner table: "Does Not Meet Requirements." That covers the MSN FNP and AGPCNP, both DNP routes and both CAGE certificates: CUW is not offering them as preparation for a Louisiana APRN license. Only the campus BSN tables file Louisiana under "Meets", and those use clinicals CUW arranges with area healthcare partners. Archived copies of the table from 2023 and May 2024 showed Louisiana meeting for the MSN and both DNPs, yet CUW's MSN pages of 2022 and 2024, and its 2022 Post-MSN DNP page, already listed Louisiana among states closed to new students. Louisiana's rule for nursing schools from other states
Few boards spell this out as fully as Louisiana's. Under LAC 46:XLVII.3539, a program administered outside Louisiana, graduate level included, may not hold courses or clinical experiences in Louisiana until the Louisiana State Board of Nursing signs off.
- Lead time: the school's request, naming every clinical agency and unit, goes in six months or more ahead with syllabi, curriculum, catalog and faculty forms.
- Credentials: home-state approval, regional and Board-accepted national nursing accreditation, and exam pass data.
- Faculty: anyone teaching in Louisiana holds an active Louisiana RN or APRN license, a nursing master's or doctorate and two or more years of clinical work.
- Oversight: faculty talk with each preceptor and student every week, visit once a semester or quarter, and cover no more than nine APRN students on a given clinical day.
An approval can run three years before the school petitions to renew it, and graduate placements go to the Board on a spreadsheet due two weeks into each experience. All of it is school paperwork; the Graduate Clinical Coordinator can speak to CUW's standing.
NP practice and preceptors across Louisiana
Louisiana NPs work under what AANP calls reduced practice: at least one element of their practice runs through a collaborative agreement with a physician, regulated by the state. No preceptor tax credit or other state incentive is on record.
Ochsner Health and LCMC Health are two of the state's big systems; the larger names also include Baton Rouge General, FMOL Health and Willis-Knighton Health. By population, New Orleans-Metairie leads the metros, then Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Shreveport-Bossier City. None of those systems publishes a tie to CUW.
Louisiana licenses and the two compacts
Multistate RN licenses have been valid in Louisiana since July 1, 2019, when its compact membership took effect. If Louisiana is home and your license is multistate, you may practice in other member states, Texas, Arkansas and Wisconsin among them.
Louisiana has not enacted the APRN Compact, which takes effect nowhere before a seventh state signs on, so a Louisiana APRN license stays in Louisiana. Questions CUW students ask
Can I study in CUW's online NP programs while living in Louisiana?
CUW publishes no rule barring enrollment by home state. Its disclosure does list Louisiana as not meeting requirements for every graduate NP program, so CUW makes no claim that its MSN, DNP or CAGE readies you for a Louisiana APRN license. Get CUW admissions' current position in writing first.
Could I complete CUW clinical hours at a Louisiana site anyway?
Two sets of rules stack up. CUW's catalog makes you responsible for confirming eligibility in any clinical state outside Wisconsin, and Louisiana wants a school from elsewhere to hold Board approval, sought six months ahead, before its students train there. Ask the Graduate Clinical Coordinator whether that approval exists; the licensure row stays the same either way.
Does a Louisiana multistate license cover clinicals in Texas or Arkansas?
With Louisiana as your declared home state and a multistate RN license, you hold a privilege to practice in Texas, Arkansas and the other member states. CUW's pages never say outright whether a clinical state wants its own license, so settle that with CUW's coordinator before you sign on with a preceptor.
Why did Louisiana's status in CUW's table change in 2024?
CUW gives no reason, and the nursing tables carry no footnotes. Compare archived copies and the switch appears: the May 2024 copy lists Louisiana as meeting for the MSN and both DNPs, and the August 14, 2024 copy moves it to does not meet, where every later capture keeps it.
