Concordia University Wisconsin NP programs for Maine nurses
Concordia University Wisconsin's current disclosure gives Maine a clean sweep: every graduate NP table, plus the online RN to BSN, lists it as meeting requirements. The Maine State Board of Nursing publishes no rule on schools from other states placing students in Maine, so the practical questions are your license and how Maine's 24-month transition for new NPs affects who is ready to teach you.

What Maine's Board says, and leaves unsaid
Chapter 7 of the Board's regulations covers how Maine approves its own prelicensure programs; a school elsewhere sending a student into a Maine clinic is not addressed. The Board's education pages link to no such guidance either. With no separate state step on record, the site's contract with CUW and graduate faculty approval carry the load, as our clinical contracts page explains.
Maine's student exemption is narrower than it looks. Title 32, section 2103(2) exempts student nursing only when it is integral to a Board-approved program that leads to a first license. A CUW NP student is already an RN in a graduate program, so expect to rely on your own license, valid in Maine, and confirm the point with the Graduate Clinical Coordinator.
The 24-month transition and your preceptor
AANP lists Maine as full practice with a condition attached. A new Maine NP spends the first 24 months in one of two setups: supervised by a physician or an experienced NP, or employed by a hospital or clinic that has a physician as medical director. Only after that stretch do they practice on their own authority.
That detail matters when you size up a preceptor. An NP still inside the transition is being supervised themselves, and CUW's archived minimums asked for seasoning too: one year of practice in the 2014-15 handbook, two years of clinical experience in the 2022 FAQ. Where Maine NP students search
About 578,000 people live in the Portland-South Portland metro, over three times Bangor's count, and Lewiston-Auburn is smaller still. Among the larger systems, MaineHealth and Northern Light Health share the field with MaineGeneral Health and Central Maine Healthcare. Independent practices outside the metros count as well, provided the site is primary care and graduate faculty approve it; the primary care site rules explain the limits for FNP and AGPCNP clinicals.
Licensing, New Hampshire and the Mequon trip
Maine's multistate licenses date to the compact's first day, January 19, 2018. With Maine as your legal home and a multistate RN license, you can train in Maine or next door in New Hampshire, itself a compact state and a meets state in CUW's table (see our New Hampshire guide). Maine has not enacted the APRN Compact.
One piece of the program leaves New England. The MSN FNP and AGPCNP include a short on-campus Advanced Health Assessment intensive in Mequon, three days on the program pages and two to three in the catalog, and CUW's 2022 FAQ counted lodging for it among extra expenses. Questions CUW students ask
Can I take CUW's online AGPCNP program from Maine?
Yes. CUW's current disclosure lists Maine as meeting requirements in the MSN primary care NP table, which covers the AGPCNP along with the FNP. The only enrollment restriction CUW publishes has nothing to do with geography: F-1 visa holders cannot take the online formats. As everywhere, you secure your own preceptors and CUW's graduate faculty approve them.
Are CUW's PMHNP programs open to Maine residents?
CUW's disclosure has no table for the MSN PMHNP or the PMHNP DNP, so Maine's status for those two degrees is unpublished. The PMHNP CAGE certificate does have a table, and it lists Maine as meeting. A Maine NP adding psychiatric practice gets the clearer answer from the certificate; ask admissions about the degrees.
I live in New Hampshire. Do I need a Maine license for a Portland site?
New Hampshire belongs to the compact, so if you claim it as your primary residence and hold a multistate RN license, that license covers Maine practice too; one issued by a non-compact state for that state alone would not. CUW's catalog asks only for an unencumbered RN license, so settle the clinical-state question with the Graduate Clinical Coordinator. Our RN license guide has more.
Does the Maine Board have to approve CUW before my clinicals start?
Nothing in the Board's regulations or education pages sets such a step. Chapter 7 deals with approving Maine prelicensure programs only. What counts is CUW's clinical contract with your site plus the graduate faculty's sign-off, and a health system may layer on its own onboarding.
